Description

ARTIFACT:

This is an ashtray for the United States Navy's USS Sailfish SS-19This ship was originally the USS Squalus SS-192, launched from Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard on September 14th, 193The Squalus was sunk off Rye, NH during a test dive on May 23th, 1939: over the next two days, 33 survivors were rescued. The ship was decommissioned that November and recommissioned as the USS Sailfish on May 15th, 1940.

VINTAGE:

Circa World War II.

SIZE:

Approximately 5-5/16" diameter and 1-1/16" thickness.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Monel or nickel-plated brass with painted lettering.
