ARTIFACT: This is a very rare painted B-4 bag for a pilot from the United States 460th Fighter Squadron, 348th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force, also known as the "Black Rams". The group existed for only twenty months and served in the Southwest Pacific arena. The bag belonged to Lieutenant Harvie A. Bull, whose name and other information is stenciled on the reverse of the bag. It is a structured canvas bag with a leather handle and trim, and wonderful painted patches on the front: two in color of the Black Rams and the 5th Air Force and one black and white one. The bag unzips in half, has four feet, and also has two zippered side pockets. There is a short and a long flap with snaps in the main compartment (there is also one half of a leather strap inside but the buckle end is missing). There is an illegible address label still stuck to the top side of the case.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 19" in height and 26" in width and 4" in depth.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Painted canvas, leather, plated brass.

ATTACHMENT: Handle attached with buckles, snaps, zippers, shoelace ties, leather strap (buckle end missing).

MARKINGS: CONMAR on zipper; UNITED ? on snaps; HAB on top.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Army Air Forces collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VBJJX09 LFGEX10/11 SEGEX7/14

CONDITION: 6 (Fine+): The bag is still intact in every way: all closures work except for inner leather buckle strap, of which half is missing, and one zipper works but its pull is missing. The bag does have areas of light to moderate discoloration and age in general and one 1/4" hole in the side; the interior shows very light wear and only scattered spots of light staining. The only area with very heavy wear is the top side, where there are a few holes (none go all the way through) and some separation of the leather from the case.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
