ARTIFACT: Nice 1960's United States Navy Heavy Attack Recon Squadron 3 RVAH-3 jacket patch. VAH-3 was commissioned June 15, 1956 at the Jacksonville, Florida Naval Air Station. During 1960, the squadron was given the additional duty of training crews for the North American Vigilante, and the first A3J-1s were received in June, 1961. With the arrival of the A3J-1s, the training of A-3 crews saw a phasing out, the last class of Skywarrior pilots and bombardiers graduated in 1964. The VAH-3 was redesignated RVAH-3 in 1964 and transferred to Albany, Georgia and again to Key West, Florida before being disestablished in 1979. Nicknamed the "Sea Dragons" the center of the US-made patch depicts a dragon rising up from the sea above a carrier and blowing a large mushroom cloud of smoke from its mouth.
