Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a wonderful French-made World War I United States Air Service (USAS) pilot tunic. It is named inside, but unfortunately the writing is very hard to read. The tunic has a 3rd Corps patch in wool and bullion, a bullion rank stripe by the cuff, two bars at the shoulders and two sets of collar insignia, one for an officer. There is no size label (please see measurements below).

VINTAGE:

Circa World War I (1918 written on inside label).

SIZE:

No size tag. Wing: approximately 3-1/2" by 1-1/8". Tunic: approximately 18-1/2" from armpit to armpit; 27-1/2" length from collar to hem (on reverse); 23-1/2" from shoulder seam to cuff; 16-1/2" between shoulders.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Tunic: wool, cotton twill, brass; wing and patches: wool embroidered in bullion thread; bronze/brass insignia.

ATTACHMENT:

Buttons, three hook and eyes at throat, two clips on reverse at waist.

MARKINGS:

Buisson et Delorme Paris in collar; Buisson et Delorme label inside pocket (dated 1918 Ð name is unreadable).

CONDITION:

7 (Very Fine): The tunic has spots of wear mostly to the lining and the left sleeve; one main button and one breast pocket button missing.
