ARTIFACT: Circa 1900 Hamburg - Amerika Steamship Line Petty Officer hat badge in wire, tinsel, and silk embroidery on wool. The center of the hat badge shows an embroidered flag of blue and white with gray details and black lettering. The flag pole is coiled wire with tinsel detail and the oval badge features a wire coil embellishment along the outer edge, separated in one spot. The Hamburg - Amerika Line was a transatlantic German shipping company established in 1847. The company's full name, in German, is Hamburg Amerikanische Paketfahrt Aktien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) and it was at one time, the world's largest shipping company.
