ARTIFACT:
This is a World War II worker identification badge numbered 21018 for the New England Shipbuilding Corporation of South Portland, Maine. This sleepy little Maine community underwent a sea change with the advent of World War II: two shipyards were built there within two years. The South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation, also known as the "West Yard", started in 1941, following the Todd-Bath Iron ("East") Yard formed a year earlier. Both yards steamed along until 1943, when they merged into the New England Shipbuilding Corporation.
VINTAGE:
Circa World War II.
SIZE:
Approximately 2-3/8" in height and 1-5/8" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Plated brass, celluloid, paper, photograph.
ATTACHMENT:
Horizontal pin with drop-in locking swivel catch.
