Description
This is an early World War II worker identification badge for the South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation in South Portland, Maine. The sleepy little community of South Portland underwent a sea change with the advent of World War II: two shipyards were built there within two years. The South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation, also known as the "West Yard", started in 1941, following the Todd-Bath Iron ("East") Yard formed a year earlier. Both yards steamed along until 1943, when they merged into the New England Shipbuilding Corporation. The badge is by Whitehead & Hoag.
