ARTIFACT: This is a World War II worker identification badge numbered 17111 for the New England Shipbuilding Corporation of South Portland, Maine. This sleepy little Maine community underwent a sea change with the advent of World War II: two shipyards were built there within two years. The South Portland Shipbuilding Corporation, also known as the "West Yard", started in 1941, following the Todd-Bath Iron ("East") Yard formed a year earlier. Both yards steamed along until 1943, when they merged into the New England Shipbuilding Corporation.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 2-3/8" in height and 1-5/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Plated brass, celluloid, paper, photograph.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin (missing) with drop-in locking swivel catch.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a war worker collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VBJX12 LDEX8/12 SDEM12/19

CONDITION: 6 (Fine+): The badge shows some moderate wear and tarnish; pin is missing.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
