ARTIFACT: Wonderful 1890's West Chop Light Treen Pin Holder in the form of a miniature bellows, also known as Mauchline ware. Original pieces of Mauchline ware were produced by the Smith family of Mauchline, Ayrshire, now Strathclyde, Scotland. The pincushion is wood and velvet and features the image of West Chop Light in lovely detail and reads: "WEST CHOP LIGHT, VINEYARD HAVEN, MASS" beneath. The lighthouse was originally built in 1817, but suffered ocean erosion and needed to be pushed back once in 1930 and then again in 1946 and was operated by the United States Lighthouse Service. It was the last of the Vineyard's lighthouses to become automated and still uses the original Fresnel lens during operation.
