ARTIFACT: This is a Wonderful 1870s-1880s New York City Health Department Inspector Badge #137.

A wonderful example of a rare Inspector badge from the HEALTH DEPARTMENT CITY OF NEW YORK, which was founded in 1870 as a consolidation of predecessor agencies and exists today as the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

This badge is made of cast brass with a light gold wash, with hand engraved details: INSPECTOR and 137 on front, and extensive evidence of hand-finishing on the back.

The agency works tirelessly protecting Public Health today, as it did with far less resources in the day when this badge was worn. One can imagine the dogged Public Servant wearing this badge trudging through the tenements and markets of Old New York.

VINTAGE: Circa 1870's - 1880's.

SIZE: Approximately 2-3/8" in height x 1-7/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Cast Brass with light gold wash, with hand engraved.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical T-style pin with catch.

MARKINGS: N/A.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a New York Police Badge collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VDIGL21 LABGEX02/11/21 SABGEX02/23/23

CONDITION: 8+ (Excellent): The badge shows minor to moderate wear, and extensive evidence of hand-finishing on the back. Overall it is in excellent condition.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
