The Maine exploded at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, and popular opinion at the time blamed the Spanish for the Maine's demise although the evidence was far from conclusive. The rectangular picture shows the Maine on the open ocean sailing past some sailboats. The entire picture is framed by and hangs from a chain link with a securing hoop at each corner.
