ARTIFACT: This is a handsome picture of the USS Maine, the sinking of which precipitated the Spanish-American War. The Maine exploded at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, and popular opinion at the time blamed the Spanish for the Maine's demise although the evidence was far from conclusive. The rectangular picture shows the Maine on the open ocean sailing past some sailboats. The entire picture is framed by and hangs from a chain link with a securing hoop at each corner.

VINTAGE: Circa Spanish American War.

SIZE: Approximately 8" height (not including chain) and 12-15/16" width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Glass, printed paper, wood backing, metal chain.

ATTACHMENT: Linked chain.

MARKINGS: F.N. ATWOOD 95 COPYRIGHT 1898 BY H.A. WHEELER.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Navy collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VCEX98 LHEX8/10 SeVIEX03/19

CONDITION: 7 (Very Fine): Picture has some water damage just along edge and the chain is tarnished.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
