ARTIFACT:
This is a glass tumbler commemorating the USS Maine, the sinking of which precipitated the Spanish-American War. The Maine exploded at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, and popular opinion at the time blamed the Spanish for the Maine's demise although the evidence was far from conclusive. The tumbler shows the doomed ship and reads REMEMBER THE MAINE.
