ARTIFACT: Rare United States Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind (W-279) cruise book for Operation Deep Freeze 1964. The USCG Eastwind, an icebreaker, was one of the ships that participated in the first Operation Freeze ??? a joint effort between many countries (USA, New Zealand, UK, France, Japan, Norway, Chile, Argentina, and the U.S.S.R.) to explore the South Pole, which at the time was the least explored area on Earth. Operation Deep Freeze I was an attempt to gain knowledge of the climate, glacial movements, and marine life of the region and the USN and USCG were there to support the scientists while gathering data. This USCG cruise book documents Eastwind's 1964 Operation Deep Freeze and features photos of the soldiers and commanders of the ship, along with candid photos of activities participated in and work accomplished, all while telling the story of the 1964 Operation. The cover shows the route taken during the Operation and reads: "EASTWIND CRUISE BOOK OPERATION DEEP FREEZE" and was put together in part by the First District Photo Lab. The reverse shows an image of the Eastwind during Operation Deep Freeze '64.
