ARTIFACT:
This is a rare Model 1932 Royal Hungarian Air Force officer dagger with a hanger. The dagger has its original gilt brass scabbard, which is attractively engraved to Major General Makray Sandor, one-time Military Attache to Germany. We know only some other limited information about Makray: his posts included Adjutant, Ministry of Defence, the Chief of 5th Section Troop Training, Group II Training Staff, and the General Staff Commanding Officer of the 2nd Mountain Brigade, Eastern Front. This possibly could have been a presentation dagger to Makray from the Air Force or a high-ranking friend in the Air Force, or he perhaps may have held an administrative role with the Air Force in the 1930s (pre-WWII). The blade is fairly bright and tapers to a sharp point. The eagle is gilt as opposed to silvered, perhaps to indicate a general officer. This dagger was made by Kozak Antal of Budapest and is numbered 669 above the maker mark upon the ricasso. The reverse of the guard has a small crest stamp.
VINTAGE:
Circa 1930s.
SIZE:
Approximately 13-1/2" in length and 4-1/2" in width (at guard); blade only: 8-5/16" in length and 13/16" in width; scabbard only: approximately 9-5/8" in length and 1-1/16" in width; about 14-5/8" total length (while in scabbard); hanger hangs about 9-1/2" in length off dagger.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Steel blade, gilt brass, painted brass grip, gilt scabbard, nylon blend hanger material.
ATTACHMENT:
Hanger with buckles and clips, rings, release button.
MARKINGS:
Engraving to Makray Sandor on blade; 669 KOZAK ANTAL BUDAPEST on ricasso; crest stamp on reverse of guard.
