ARTIFACT:
This is a huge, glossy period photograph of the raising of the United States Navy submarine USS Squalus (SSN-192). The Squalus was launched from Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard on September 14th, 1938 and sunk off Rye, NH on May 23, 1939 during a test dive. A rescue effort on May 24-25 saved 33 crewmen. The ship was raised and towed to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in September 1939, decommissioned that November, and then recommissioned as the USS Sailfish (SS-192). The photograph came to us from the estate of a Portsmouth Naval Shipyard worker, and was accompanied by a handmade wooden model of the Squalus (please see link below for information - model sold separately).
