Description
This is a circa 1891-1896 flag from the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post in Lynn, Massachusetts. The post was named for General Frederick W. Lander a Salem, Massachsuetts native. Lander refused to surrender a Maryland town to Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War, forcing Jackson's retreat, and led a charge against more Confederates in Virginia shortly thereafter. Lander died of pneumonia weeks later while awaiting word of a replacement. The flag is in silk and shows forty-four stars. Painted gilt upon the red stripes at the center are the words IN MEMORIAM GEN. LANDER POST, NO. 5, G.A.R. LYNN, MASS. The flag is shrink-wrapped against a piece of foam board for protection.
