ARTIFACT:
Beautiful WWI United States Army 91st Infantry Division painted helmet in excellent condition. The 91st Infantry Division was constituted in 1917 and engaged in its first operation overseas in the St. Mihiel Offensive in France. They participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive where the German First Guard Division was destroyed after heavy attack. The 91st was awarded for its service and active role in the Lorraine, Meuse-Argonne, and Ypres-Lys campaigns. The helmet displays the Division's emblem, a green triangle that resembles an evergreen tree, in fact one of the 91st's nicknames is the 'Pine Tree Division'. The underside of the rear of the helmet's rim is stamped: "ZD53" and the leather liner inside is in excellent condition with its original paper tag intact, it reads: "TIGHTEN CORD AND ADJUST NET TO FIT HEAD (see photo). The helmet is painted in a dark sand paint and reads: "91" on the front with the infantry insignia in green behind.
