ARTIFACT: This is a beautiful patriotic plate commemorating the USS Maine, the sinking of which precipitated the Spanish-American War. The Maine exploded at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, and popular opinion at the time blamed the Spanish for the Maine's demise although the evidence was far from conclusive. The plate shows the doomed ship upon a scroll watched over by an eagle and reads REMEMBER THE MAINE U.S BATTLESHIP MIANE DESTROYED IN HAVANA HARBOR FEB. 15 1898.

VINTAGE: Circa 1898.

SIZE: Approximately 8-1/2" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Ceramic.

ATTACHMENT: N/A.

MARKINGS: E.B.P. CO. and maker's stamp WARRANTIED B PATENT APPLIED FOR.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Navy collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VCEX03 LABEX4/11 SAJJX6/12

CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The plate has some attractive overall crackling and a slight nick to the paint along its edge.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
