ARTIFACT: This is a beautiful circa Spanish-American War framed lithographed print of the United States Navy battleship USS Maine. The sinking of the USS Maine, which happened at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, precipitated the Spanish-American War. The ship exploded after a short three-year career, and popular opinion at the time blamed the Spanish for her demise, although the evidence was far from conclusive. There is a cameo inset of Captain Charles D. Sigsbee, the Maine's last commanding officer, in the upper right-hand corner, above the main scene. The print is signed by the artist, and is still in excellent condition, with its original bright and beautiful coloration. The frame is original and highly decorative.

VINTAGE: Circa Spanish-American War (1898).

SIZE: Approximately 15-5/8" in height by 21-5/8" in width and 1" in thickness.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Lithographed print, paper, wooden frame with gilt paint.

ATTACHMENT: Staples, twine.

MARKINGS: FETHERSTON '98; COPYRIGHT 1898 BY M.F. TOBIN, U.S.V. NAVY NEW YORK.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Navy collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VBEX13 LABEX1/13 SLAAEX11/14 psLAGEX05/21
