Description
This is a circa late 1920s badge for the first President of the Howell Township, New Jersey Fire Company No. 1: Adelphia Fire Company. The small yet handsome badge is named to C.H.T. Clayton, who created Company No. 1 and served as its President until his death. After losing some property in a 1926 fire, his concern for the well-being of families in his community prompted the organization of Company No. 1 a few months later. The small community had formerly relied upon the fire company of neighboring Freehold, and the travel distance did not help the odds of beating their fires.
