Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a hand-painted barracks sign for the United States 451st Bomb Squadron, 322nd Bomb Group, 9th Air Force in Europe from World War II. The sign is a bull's-eye design in great earth tones and reads THE FIGHTIN' 451ST. Pictured at center is a gorilla dressed in a football uniform and goggles who is about to hurl a missile from atop a cloud.

VINTAGE:

Circa World War II.

SIZE:

Approximately 3/4" thick and 12-1/2" in diameter.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Hand-painted plywood with nails.

ATTACHMENT:

Wire hanger on reverse.

None.

CONDITION:

6+ (Fine-Very Fine): Sign has not faded significantly but the layers of plywood are somewhat warped and there some cracking on its face.
