Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1940 British Overseas Airways Corporation pilot wing. The wing started its life a little earlier, in the late 1930's, as an Imperial Airways Pilot Wing. But when Imperial Airways ceased to exist, when it, and British Airways Ltd., were combined to form BOAC in April of 1940, The Imperial Pilot (or a local jeweler?) apparently ground off the IA originally in the central shield, And stamped BOA in the enter to show that he was with the new Airline. Either for a lack of room or the redundancy of the word "Corporation" the "C" was left off the wing. A wonderful piece of pinpointed Airline history showing the reuse of materials taking place during the early darkest days of WWII. And a wonderful addition to any UK Airline Wing Collection.
