ARTIFACT:
This is a very intriguing full size 6-point star, made in nickel plated nickel by Los Angeles Stamp & Stationery, reading DEPUTY SHERIFF RANCHO PARK.
Rancho Park is a neighborhood in Los Angeles that was developed in the late 1920's as a middle-class area, and most of its housing stock consists of Spanish Colonial bungalows and ranch houses. The community is nestled between West Los Angeles and Cheviot Hills. History shows that the neighborhood was once a part of Westwood, until Olympic Boulevard was built, dividing the area North and South. The Southern section, now known as Rancho Park, felt cut off from its North side, lobbying for its own identity in the 1930's. This badge could date from that period, as a tongue-in-cheek way to present the community's "own" Law Enforcement, or perhaps really having some sort of actual Law Enforcement duties deriving from Los Angeles County as opposed to the City, hence the DEPUTY SHERIFF title instead of a POLICEMAN title.
Whatever the exact story of this badge is, it is certainly an interesting artifact of Los Angeles area Law Enforcement, and it definitely shows what appears to be honest duty wear.
