ARTIFACT:
This is a unique Civil War presentation medal awarded to Brevet Brigadier General William Dunlap Dixon. Dixon, a St. Thomas, Pennsylvania native, came from a long line of war heroes. He was born in 1833 and his forbears had fought in the French and Indian Wars and later the Revolution: his grandfather had been a British prisoner-of-war for a year. St. Thomas Postmaster and already a militia member, Dixon became one of the earliest voluntary recruits on April 18, 1861. After a short term he became Captain of what was to become Company D of the 6th Regiment Reserves, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He quickly attained the rank of Major following Antietam, and through his heroism in the face of heavy losses at Fredericksburg, he rose to Lieutenant Colonel. Wounded at Gettysburg, Dixon received the brevet of Colonel, and later that of Brigadier-General. The medal is in 14 karat gold and comes with its original case and was made by Bailey, Banks and Biddle. It shows all the corps/commands that General Dixon served in: AP = Army of the Potomac, Maltese Cross = 11th Corps, moon/circle = 3rd Corps, and crescent moon is another corps. Interestingly the eagle in the center was also a corps badge too and it was an unusual one, for the 20th Corps. It has beautifully enameled symbols, including a Knight's cross and crescent moon, and hangs from a light blue and white ribbon.
