Description
This is a sterling silver ring by Balfour for a United States Navy pilot from Pensacola Naval Air Station with the initials S.A. engraved inside. Research shows that Samuel L. Allen is listed as Naval Aviator #6739, earning his wings as an Aviation Cadet on 8 Oct. 1940, and I can find no other USN aviators earning their wings in 1940 with the initials "S. A.". The ring has a blue stone at center and reads: "NAVAL AVIATOR" around the frame in raised lettering. One side of the ring shows a winged US Shield with an anchor behind and reads year: "1940" below is a aircraft propeller and the letters "PNAS" (Pensacola Naval Air Station). The the other side of the ring shows an eagle perched on a US Shield with a ship's wheel below.
