Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a rare World War II United States Army 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment "patch type" distinctive insignia. Activated February 24, 1942, the 504th (aka "Devils in Baggy Pants") and assigned to the Army Airborne Command, the 504th soon became part of the 82nd Army Airborne Infantry Regiment. The 504th served in Italy and North Africa. Casualties were so prevalent in the regiment that it was actually excused from the Normandy invasion to regroup. The beautifully enameled insignia shows the head of a red devil with a pitchfork beneath a blue parachute.
