ARTIFACT:
NOTE: All of these USN patches being listed on consignment with consignor code CON-DSS come from the lifelong collection of a retired Vietnam War USN Pilot who had close times with the Tailhook Association and was able to obtain some very special and unique patches. We are proud to have been given the opportunity to bring parts of this collection to market. We will be listing 25 or so now, and hope to have another offering in April or May.
Originally established as reserve squadron VF-721 on 20 July 1950, it was reestablished as VF-141 on 4 February 1953 and then reestablished as VF-53 on 15 October 1963. The squadron was disestablished on 29 January 1971.
LTJG Charles Houston, the designer of the WWII insignia, explained how the insignia came to be updated and used by VF-141. When the squadron was redesignated VF-141 on 4 February 1953 The new skipper Frank E. Standring who had been a member of VF-14 and Houston’s wingman, requested CNO to reactivate the Iron Angel insignia. Approval was given 27 July 1953. The insignia carried on to VF-53 until the squadron was deactivated in 1971.
