NOTE: All of these USN patches being listed on consignment with consignor code CON-DSS come from the lifelong collection of a retired Vietnam War USN Pilot who had close times with the Tailhook Association and was able to obtain some very special and unique patches. We are proud to have been given the opportunity to bring parts of this collection to market. We will be listing 25 or so now, and hope to have another offering in April or May.
Wat we have here is an extremely rare example of the WWII US Navy VF-14 IRON ANGELS Flight Jacket Patch, used, worn, and removed from a flight jacket.
VF-14 was established on 23 August 1943 at NAS Atlantic City as a component of Carrier Air Group Fourteen. Flying Grumman F6F Hellcats, VF-14 took part in the naval battles for Tinian, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Guam, Palau, Okinawa, Leyte, and the second battle of the Philippine Sea. The Iron Angels returned to San Diego in November 1944 with nine Aces. The squadron was decommissioned on 14 June 1946.
The designer of the WW II Iron Angels was LTJG Charles Houston who wrote a great book about the WW II Squadron History.
Although a WWII patch, this particular patch was worn by a latecomer to the squadron, Ensign Ray McCoy, who was apparently with the squadron in 1946 before the squadron was disestablished on 14 June 1946.
