Description
This is a good representative example of the iconic United States Army Artillery short sword made by Ames in the 1830s-1840s. This example still retains its scabbard, although the leather is deteriorated and the tip is separated from the scabbard. The grey blade retains its Ames markings and date. The scabbard tip and throat have matching Roman numeral markings. This is a good solid example with most of the hard-to-find scabbard. The grip is wonderfully detailed in a fish scale pattern with a great American eagle on both sides of the brass pommel. The marks are for N. P. Ames, which pre-dated the Ames Manufacturing Company, born in 184Ames was a Massachusetts company, and the most prolific producer of swords ever for the United States military.
