This is a Model 1873 (M1873) Trapdoor Springfield .45-.70 socket bayonet. The 45 calibre "Trapdoor" rifle was produced at Springfield Armory in Massachusetts for two decades beginning in 187The bayonet is marked U.S.
VINTAGE:Circa 1873-1893.
SIZE:Overall: approximately 20-3/4" in length and 2-1/2" in width; blade only (starting at fullering on inside to tip): 16-3/4" by 7/8" (at widest part); socket: 7/8" in diameter.
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Steel.
