Description
Lovely Japanese brass tanto tsuba. A tsuba (aka guard) has two functions, to contribute to the balance of the weapon, and protection of the hand. Tsubas were made by highly skilled Japanese craftsman devoted to making nothing else, most were ornately decorated and often became family heirlooms passed through generations. A tanto (short blade) is a type of traditionally made Japanese sword once worn by the samurai and was used in traditional martial arts mainly as a stabbing weapon. This example of a tanto tsuba is decorated with intricate details that depict an abalone shell and dog.
