ARTIFACT:
This is a rare lot of seventeen candid period photographs of Luftwaffe Captain and eventual Major, Walter Nowotny. Nowotny, a native of Austria, trained during 1939 and 1940 to become a Luftwaffe fighter pilot. In 1941 he was sent to the Eastern Front with JG 54. He quickly became an Ace, credited over his short life with 258 kills. The first 250 were achieved in a mere two years, earning him the Ritterkrenz mit Eichenlaub, Schwerten und Brillanten (Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds). After his brilliant record had reached 255 kills, he was temporarily pulled from flying to go on a propaganda tour. Eleven months later, Nowotny was made Commander of a unit called "Kommando Nowotny" and sent back to the front lines, operating a Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. He did not live to see the end of the war: he was killed in a crash after combat with American fighter forces on November 7, 1944. Nowotny was 23. It is still unclear whether he was shot down by enemy fire or his aircraft experienced engine failure. Predeceased by his brother Hubert, who fell during the Battle of Stalingrad, Walter Nowotny was posthumously honored by having the first operational jet fighter wing (Jagdgeschwader 7) named for him. The photographs show Nowotny surrounded by his men in many cases, sometimes partaking in musical entertainment, sometimes wearing aviator sunglasses, but nearly always smiling.
