What we have here is the Iconic Early WWII USN Fighting 3 VF-3 Felix the Cat Flight Jacket Patch of USS Saratoga, USS Lexington, USS Yorktown, and Battle of Midway fame.
This is the early, RIGHT-FACING version of the patch, made ship-board with a single black stencil on off-white/light gray vinylized green cotton duck. Not to be confused with the late war LEFT-FACING patch which used TWO colors: black overall, and white for Felixs eye and face.
Unfortunately, the name of the original owner of this patch has been lost to history. The patch itself has been in a collection for the past 50-plus years, having been found at a flea market in West Virgnia in the 1970s, and has just come to market for the first time in half a century!
This was obviously the WWII USN Aviators spare patch, which was never cut out and never sewn to a flight jacket, as if out of a time capsule from 1942, over 80 years ago.
An extremely rare and important Early WWII USN Flight Jacket Patch, this would be a centerpiece in any USN Aviation Patch Collection.
