ARTIFACT:
Wonderfully historic club from the Lawrence Textile Strike commonly referred to as the "Bread and Roses" strike, which began on January 12, 1912 and lasted through a brutally cold winter ending March 12th of that same year. The strike was organized by the International Workers of the World, 'Wobblies' and it was not expected to last longer than two months. The strike involved more than 20,000 workers and it shut down nearly every mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The strike garnered national attention when a bystander was killed during a protest, hungry children of strike workers were sent to families for care, and a national investigation found that the working conditions were extremely poor. The strike was successful, workers received nearly 20% increases in wages, but despite the successful efforts of the IWW, the local Lawrence chapter collapsed within the following year. The turned oak 'Billy Club' was possibly made from furniture and originally had a rope lanyard through the knob of the end. The club features: "LAWRENCE STRIKE" and below the dates of the strike: "JAN-12-12 � MAR � 12", nicely inked as a memento of a brutal strike.
