Description
Great 1944 POW-Art hand-carved jewelry box made with walnut by an Italian prisoner of war at Camp Atterbury, near Edinburgh, Indiana. The jewelry box is fashioned in the shape of a book, the 'cover' shows a spread winged eagle bearing a shield on its chest, below are the letters: "C I" and crossed swords, at the very bottom it shows the date: "1944". The 'binding' of the box shows the letters: "PW" and the inside is lined with a cloth paper. The jewelry box features a number of delicate embellishments all over, and two tags one a period tag that reads: "THIS HAND CARVED WALNUT BOX WAS MADE BY AN ITALIAN WAR PRISON INTERNED AT CAMP ATTERBURY, INDIANA 1944 COLONEL WELTON MODISETTE COMMANDER" and another newer tag from an award winning POW display.

CONDITION:8- (Very FineExcellent): The hand-carved box shows minor to moderate wear, the lid is separated from base, nearly all the paper lining remains intact, as does the period tag, overall excellent condition.
