ARTIFACT:
I'm not sure how many German prisoners of war interned at Camp Robert E. Lee in South Petersburg, Virginia felt the desire to purchase a sterling silver souvenir ring to commemorate their stay at the camp in 1944, but some enterprising school ring company thought it was worth a try, and they sold at least one, because here it is! High School graduation style ring with generic military eagles on each side, with a large central seal depicting a Germanic Eagle (actually VERY much like the Tyrolean eagle depicted on Nazi period shooting badges) with 1944 above. Around the seal it reads: GERMAN PRISONERS OF WAR CAMP LEE USA. Nice old patina and moderate wear. A very interesting, and rare artifact from WWII POW Camps. Camp Lee had been a training facility before and during World War I and then had been turned in to a state game preserve. It was reconstructed for World War II and used as a Quartermaster Replacement Training Center and School. After the war the facility was renamed Fort Lee.
