ARTIFACT:
This is a circa 1950's hat badge for the Spanish Grupe de Tiradores de Ifni. Sidi Ifni, a city in West Africa, became a Spanish colony in 1860. Upon independence from France in 1956, Morocco was eager to reclaim the city. In April 1957, violent clashes gave way to six months of murder and mayhem, followed by an eight month war known as the "Forgotten War" in Spain. The badge was worn by the "Grupe de Tiradores de Ifni", a group of both indigenous infantry as well as Spanish officers and specialist personnel. Sixty of this group attempted to repulse the Moroccans at Tiluin. On November 25, a rescue attempt was authorized by Franco authorities and commanded by Captain Sanchez Duque. Five Spanish versions of the Heinkel He-111 bomber and five Spanish versions of the Junkers Ju-52 were used. Subsequently everyone was evacuated to Sidi Ifni and Tiliuín was abandoned because of the damage it suffered. The war ended in June 1958. The badge is a star framed by a golden crescent with two crossed rifles.
