ARTIFACT:
Extremely rare 1936 Fourth Marines Annual. A wonderful painted, leather-bound, photo laden China Marines yearbook. This example shows the eagle, globe, and anchor emblem at the top center in raised detail. Two crossed flags below, the American and Fourth Regiment. Along the bottom is shows the image of a ship and reads: "FOURTH MARINES ANNUAL 1936". It is possible that this example was printed in China – the back features a number of advertising sponsors – nearly all located in China. The sections of the Annual include photos of the serving members in each Company taken by Polyfoto China Company 837 Bubbling Well Road. Middle sections show activities, athletics and awards won, communication, platoon clubs, and the Fourth Marines band. The back of the Annual features a Regimental Diary with excerpts such as: "Week Ending November 16th: - The Fourth Marines observe the 160th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, Armistice Day and Navy Day with fitting ceremonies…..the Second Bn. Armistice Day dance proves delightful entertainment for large crowed of fun-makers…..First Bn. takes duckpin honors when the three Battalion teams roll off three way tie on Foreign "Y" alleys…..belated Rugby season starts with large squad reporting to Coach H. A. (Rugby) Smith…..Smith faces hard task with many new men reporting to learn the fundamentals of the handling game." Great Shanghai advertisements can be found in the very back.
