Description
Extremely rare 1930's - 40's Vermont Motor Vehicle Department Inspector hat badge. The Vermont Motor Vehicle Department Inspectors were the only Statewide Motor Vehicle enforcement agency prior to the formation of the Vermont State Police and this badge is considered in direct lineage of collectable VT State Police badges. The Vermont Highway Patrol was formed in 192This hat badge could actually have been worn as a hat badge by the organization right from the start, with the circle star badge that was used initially (I have seen a photograph of the badge in use as early as 1933) and it was used at least until 1947 when the VT State Police was formed under the Department of Public Safety. The badge is ornately embellished, the center showing the coat of arms for Vermont, a tall evergreen in a field with a cow, the mountains behind on the horizon, and detailed clouds in the sky. The top of the badge shows a deer head with a large set of antlers, the surrounding edges of the badge show nice relief detail and the base of the badge displays a scroll that reads: "VERMONT FREEDOM AND UNITY". This hat badge was worn with the Inspector Breast Badge also listed this week, see link at the bottom of this listing.
