ARTIFACT: This is an extremely rare 1925 launching program from Fore River Plant, Quincy Massachusetts for the lost boat USS Lexington (CV-2). Launched October 3 of that year, the Lexington was originally known as a battle cruiser named CC-1. Converted to an aircraft carrier and known colloquially as "Lady Lex", the ship served in the Pacific Fleet until her demise at the Battle of the Coral Sea during World War II. On May 8, 1942, the Lexington was torpedoed several times by Japanese aircraft, causing mechanical damage and triggering a series of floods, explosions and fires. 216 crewmen lost their lives and over a dozen times that were saved. The program gives a brief history of the two previous ships known as Lexington, and lists the carrier's specifications, noting that she was the longest naval ship and largest ship of any type to ever built in America up until that time.
