ARTIFACT: This is a 1942 launching postal cover for the USS Lexington (CV-16), also known as the "Blue Ghost". An aircraft carrier, the Lexington was launched September 23, 1942. The name USS Cabot had been intended for the ship, but this changed when word arrived during her construction that the USS Lexington (CV-2) had been lost in battle. The cover is postmarked for Quincy, Massachusetts three days after the launching.

VINTAGE: Circa 1942.

SIZE: Approximately 3-5/8" in height and 6-1/2" in length.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Paper.

ATTACHMENT: None.

MARKINGS: QUINCY, MASS. SEP 26 1-PM 1942.
