Description

ARTIFACT:

This is a rare type 1 World War II launch tag for the USS Capelin SS-289, which departed from Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard on January 20, 194On the ship's first war patrol, conducted in the Molucca, Flores, and Banda Seas between October and November 1943, she sank a 3,127 ton Japanese cargo ship off Ambon Island. Eager for more success, the Capelin began their second war patrol in the same area. Unfortunately, the Capelin disappeared without a trace soon afterward. This tag is plain on its reverse, and CAPELIN is written straight across the front rather than in the typical curved banner style.

Circa 1943.

Approximately 2-1/16 in height (excluding 3-5/8" of string) and 1-3/4" in width.

CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:

Foiled card stock with silk string.

ATTACHMENT:

Punched hole with string.
