ARTIFACT:
This is an extremely rare circa 1870s Western Union telegraph messenger hat badge. Western Union was started in 1856, although it had been operating for five years already under the name New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company. The large brass badge for this iconic and long-lasting company shows a shield bearing stripes and thirteen stars over a banner reading WESTERN UNION.
VINTAGE:
Circa 1870s.
SIZE:
Approximately 2-3/16" in height and 2-7/8" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Brass.
ATTACHMENT:
Bendable prongs (two are present).
