Exquisite Civil War Period small "Bowie" or Fighting knife, with the Pro - Union, ANTI - SLAVERY etched Blade: "THE AMERICAN'S PRIDE EQUAL RIGHTS, EQUAL LAWS, AND JUSTICE" on the blade (hard to photograph) and Ricasso marked only: "US" with a five point star located between the letters (see photo). This example is most likely the work of Fred James Sheffield. Lovely nickel guard and horn handle.
VINTAGE:Circa Civil War Period.
SIZE:Approximately 9" in length; Handle: 3-7/8 " x 1/2" at bottom/ 1/4"at top; Blade: 5-1/8" x 3/4"Guard: 2" x 2/8".
CONSTRUCTION / MATERIALS:Etched steel, horn, nickel.
MARKINGS:"US" with a five point star centered between letters

CONDITION:6 (Fine+): The knife shows moderate to heavy wear, blade partially bright, about 60%, but many light scratches from sharpening, age split in the handle, the nickel guard is remarkable, overall fine condition.
