Activated August 6, 1942, as the San Francisco Air Defense Wing, the group was redesignated as the San Francisco Fighter Wing in July of the next year. Administering fighter training and providing air defense for the San Francisco region were the main functions of this USAAF unit. The DI's design is an arrow pointing earthward strung across a bow fashioned from a lightning bolt. This insignia is listed in Jay Massaro's book on USAAF DIs as # S1A.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II (1943).

SIZE: Approximately 1-3/16" in diameter.
