This is a circa 1943 DI (distinctive insignia) for the San Francisco Defense Wing/Fighter Wing. Activated August 6, 1942, as the San Francisco Air Defense Wing, the group was redesignated as the San Francisco Fighter Wing in July of the next year. Administering fighter training and providing air defense for the San Francisco region were the main functions of this USAAF unit. The DI's design is an arrow pointing earthward strung across a bow fashioned from a lightning bolt. This insignia is listed in Jay Massaro's book on USAAF DIs as # S1A.
Circa World War II (1943).
Approximately 1-3/16" in diameter.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Vertical safety-style pin, clear saddle.
This is from a United States Army Air Forces collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VGEX12 LBCEX12/12
