ARTIFACT:

This is a circa 1930 advertising letter opener for the steamship S.S. City of Birmingham of the Savannah Line (or the Ocean Steamship Company of Savannah). Built in 1923 as one of the last passenger ships for the Savannah Line, the Birmingham became a cargo ship with the outbreak of World War II. She and nine on board were lost on July 30, 1942 when torpedoed by the German boat U.20The opener is in copper and reads NEW PIER – 46 NORTH RIVER.

Approximately 7-7/8" in length and 1-1/16" in width (at widest point).
