Description
This is a dated 1947 nurse graduation pin by John Frick Jewelry Company for the Garfield Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C (now Washington Hospital Center). Garfield was a Civil War era hospital that badly needed upgrades by World War II. A senator's wife volunteering at the hospital, Eleanor Tydings, recognized this and pushed for change. The 1944 Hospital Center Act with funding for three D.C. hospitals was soon passed. The pin in 10 karat gold and has the nurse's name engraved on reverse.
