Description
This wonderful ring in the form of officer's submarine dolphins was apparently made in 1943 for the skipper of the USS Finback (SS-230), Lt. Commander J. L. Hull (USNA Class of 1926). Made of Sterling Silver with a heavy gold plate, it is inscribed inside: OLD MAN USS FINBACK 194Possibly acquired and given by the crew to their beloved "Old Man" while the sub was being refitted in Pearl Harbor in April/May 1943 for the Finback's fifth war patrol. Certainly by that time there was enough camaraderie for the Skipper to be designated the "Old Man", being almost 40 years of age with a crew mostly hovering around 20! Finback went on thirteen war patrols during World War II and earned twelve battle stars. She is noted in particular for rescuing future U.S. President George Herbert Walker Bush, who was a naval aviator shot down off the Bonin Islands in 194and is credited with having sunk 69,383 tons of enemy shipping. The ring shows only light wear and would be a treasure in any WWII Submarine Collection..
