ARTIFACT: This is a launching ribbon for the USS Pintado, though it is misspelled on the ribbon as Pintapo, from the Portsmouth Naval Yard on September 15, 1943. The ribbon is not sewn over, so it may never have been distributed because of the typo. The USS Pintado was a flagship of a wolfpack on her first war patrol, commanded by Captain Leon P. Blair, which also included submarines Shark (SS-314) and Pilotfish (SS-386) and on May 31st, fired a spread of six torpedoes at overlapping targets, destroying 4,716 ton cargo ship Toho Maru.

VINTAGE: Circa 1943.

SIZE: About 2-1/4" in width by 4-7/8" in height.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Printed silk.

ATTACHMENT: To be pinned on.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a large collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VCEX 9/08
