Description
1940 USS Sailfish (ex-Squalus) First Submergence postal cover. The cover shows Neptune, the Roman God of the sea and fresh water holding his trident in one hand and a quill in the other and appears to be penning a message on a scroll being held by mermaids. The scroll reads: "Know Ye - That I was visited by Harold C. Preble, N.A., only civilian survivor of the U.S.S. Squalus disaster and I do certify that I also met him again on the U.S.S. Sailfish on her first submergence dated as shown by her postmark hereon" and is signed: "Neptune". The postal cover reads: "U.S.S. SAILFISH FIRST SUBMERGENCE" and shows a post mark dated: "JUN 29 1940 A.M. U.S.S. SAILFISH FIRST SUBMERGENCE" and features a two cent stamp that reads: "UNITED STATES POSTAGE MARK HOPKINS"
